Three Little Girls

My second little girl was born July 27, 1933. She was a fat, roly-poly baby weighing 10 lbs. Her Father wanted her name to be Mary so that is what we named her.

A year and a half later our third daughter was born on December 19, 1934. Our three little girls--what a lot of joy they brought us. I was never a very demonstrative person. It was always hard for me to express my deeper emotions. I often wish I could have told my loved ones how dear they were to me. When the girls were little, their dad used to read the funny papers to them. Ann would sit on the corner of the table as close to her Daddy's shoulder as she could get. The other two perched on each knee or one would sit on the other shoulder. After reading all of the funnies through, the girls would ask for more stories so Orville would turn the paper upside down and read make-up stories. Then the paper was turned sideways for more. Ann said it was several years before she realized you couldn't read a paper upside down.

On winter evenings the radio was turned off, I would read aloud from such books as "Little Women", "Swiss Family Robinson", etc. We read many books this way and Orville enjoyed the stories as much as the girls.

Before the children were old enough for school and when the weather permitted, I would pack a lunch and we would go with Orville to the farm or pasture or wherever he was working. He enjoyed having us with him. I took a book or some sewing or fancywork along and the children played. Those were happy, carefree days and I loved to be outside. The mountains always seemed to fascinate me. I could gaze at them and seem to gather spiritual strength from them.

In those days I seemed to have a terrible backache. I was finally persuaded to see the doctor. Dr. McQuarrie sent me to Cedar City for x-rays. It was discovered I had a fibroid tumor on the ovaries so I had to have an operation. The doctor said I was lucky to have had three children. I was in the hospital about ten days. Vina Pearce, Lillian Thompson and Lydia Robinson took care of my little girls while I was away and were very good to me after I returned home.
